Carpet binding is the application of binding to exposed carpet edges using machine stitched or heat applied methods to prevent edge raveling and provide a finished edge. It is commonly used for area rugs, runners, and stair components. Our team provides carpet binding for homes and businesses across South Florida.

What Is Carpet Binding

When carpet is cut, the raw edge is left open. The fibers along that edge are no longer held in place, and with use they begin to pull loose and unravel. Binding is what closes that edge off.

A narrow strip of material is applied along the cut edge and secured in place, either stitched by machine or bonded using heat, depending on the carpet and the look required. The result is an edge that is sealed, straight and finished, rather than raw.

This is what turns a remnant or a piece of broadloom carpet into a finished area rug. It is also what gives runners their clean edge, and what keeps stair treads and other cut carpet components from fraying where they are exposed.

The binding itself can be matched to the carpet or chosen to contrast with it, so it can be practical, decorative, or both.

Why Choose Carpet Binding

Stops the Edge From Raveling
An unbound cut edge loosens over time. Binding seals the fibers in place, so the edge stays intact through years of use.

Turns Carpet Into a Custom Rug
A leftover piece or a cut to size section of carpet becomes a finished area rug in the exact dimensions your space needs, which is not something off the shelf rugs offer.

A Clean, Deliberate Finish
Bound edges look intentional rather than cut. On runners and stair components in particular, the difference between a bound and an unbound edge is immediately visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Flooring contractor Miami - REJP Flooring LLC

What exactly does binding do?

It seals the cut edge of the carpet so the fibers cannot pull loose. Without it, an exposed edge gradually ravels and the carpet begins to look worn from the outside in.

Can you make a rug out of carpet I already have?

Yes. That is one of the most common uses for binding. A remnant or a cut section of carpet is bound along its edges and becomes a finished area rug sized to your space.

What is the difference between machine stitched and heat applied binding?

Both seal the edge. Machine stitched binding is sewn along the edge, while heat applied binding is bonded in place. Which one suits your carpet depends on the fiber, the thickness, and the finish you want. We go over the options with you.

Can binding be used on stairs?

Yes. Stair components are one of the applications it is used for, since cut carpet on stairs has exposed edges that would otherwise fray with use

How much does carpet binding cost?

The price depends on the length of the edge being bound, the type of binding, and the carpet itself. We will give you a free estimate with no obligation.
