What Is Carpet

Carpet is a textile floor covering made of fibers attached to a backing, installed as a continuous surface across the room rather than in individual pieces.

It is stretched over a cushion pad and held in place along the edges by tack strips, thin wooden strips with angled pins that grip the carpet backing. That combination of pad and tension is what gives carpet its softness underfoot and what keeps it flat over the years.

Two things make carpet different from every hard surface floor. It is warm and soft to walk on, and it absorbs sound instead of reflecting it, which is why a carpeted bedroom or office feels noticeably quieter than the same room in tile or wood.
