What Is Carpet Restretching

Carpet is not simply laid down. It is stretched under tension across the room and hooked onto tack strips, thin strips along the perimeter fitted with angled pins that grip the carpet backing and hold that tension in place.

Over the years that tension relaxes. Foot traffic, furniture being dragged, heat and humidity all work against it, and the carpet slowly loosens. The extra slack has nowhere to go, so it rises into the ripples and wrinkles you can see across the floor.

Restretching restores the original tension. The carpet is released along the edges, pulled tight again with a power stretcher, reattached to the tack strips, and the excess is trimmed away. The floor goes flat and stays flat.

This matters for more than appearance. A rippled carpet is a tripping hazard, and the raised sections take the brunt of foot traffic, so they wear out faster than the rest of the floor. Restretching early can extend how long the carpet lasts.

Why did my carpet start wrinkling in the first place?

The tension it was installed under has relaxed over time. Foot traffic, furniture being moved across it, and changes in heat and humidity all contribute. It is a normal thing for carpet to do after several years, and it does not necessarily mean the carpet was installed badly.

Do I need a new carpet, or can this be fixed?

In most cases it can be fixed. If the carpet is still in good condition and the problem is loose, rippled areas, restretching solves it. We will tell you honestly during the estimate if replacement makes more sense.

Does the furniture have to be moved?

The carpet has to be released and pulled from the edges of the room, so furniture in the affected areas needs to be moved out of the way. We will go over what that involves for your space beforehand.

Will the ripples come back?

Restretching restores the tension properly, and a correctly restretched carpet stays flat for years. If ripples return quickly, that usually points to a separate issue such as the subfloor or the pad, which we would identify on site.
