What Is Hardwood

Hardwood flooring is made from real wood, and it comes in two forms that look nearly identical once installed but behave very differently.

Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood through the full thickness of the plank. Because there is so much material to work with, it can be sanded and refinished several times over its life, which is why solid hardwood floors often outlast the homes they are in.

Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer on top bonded to layers of plywood underneath. The layered core is far more dimensionally stable, meaning it expands and contracts less when humidity rises and falls. In a climate like South Florida, and in homes built on a concrete slab, that stability is usually the deciding factor.
